FAQs

What is PAWS Preview?

PAWS Preview is an extended orientation program that provides “just in time information” for new freshmen at Texas State. It will occur the weekend prior to the first week of classes.

Is PAWS Preview required?

PAWS Preview is required of every new freshman to Texas State or new freshman-transfer student with less than 30 credit hours.

Why is PAWS Preview required?

Texas State University is required by the State of Texas to provide some specific information to students and to assure student competencies in certain areas. In addition, the university has identified further skills and information that students need to be successful college students. The PAWS Preview program has been designed to meet both state and university requirements.

Is there a cost to attend PAWS Preview?

You do not have to pay a fee to attend PAWS Preview.  You simply need to come during your assigned registration period—either Friday, August 22 or Saturday, August 23, held in LBJ Student Center Ballroom from 9:30 a.m. - 11:30 a.m.

What about meals?

You may use your meal plan if you have one or pay cash for meals on-campus.

Where do I park?

With a valid Texas State Parking Permit, you may park in any color zone on campus, with the exception of red and reserved spaces.

Where do I stay during PAWS Preview?

You will stay where you will be living for the Fall Semester (i.e. home or residence hall).  The Texas State residence halls are open during PAWS Preview.

Will I have time to take care of personal business?

You will NOT have time during PAWS Preview — the days are packed with sessions that you must attend.  You may have 15 or 30 minute breaks from time to time but that is not enough time to take care of personal business.  It is highly recommended that you move in to their dorms at their assigned day and time and run errands before or after you two-day session.  In addition, you will have two days after the program ends before classes begin to complete errands.

What will I be doing during PAWS Preview?

During PAWS Preview, you will be in sessions specifically designed to present information necessary for new Texas State students.  Sessions include: Computer Training, where you will obtain a Texas State computer account & e-mail address; Library Orientation, a discussion of the resources within the library; Alcohol 101, a discussion about the effects of alcohol & Texas State’s alcohol policy; College Notetaking, which includes tips to help you be successful in the classroom; a Diversity Session, where you will learn who is at Texas State and what others have to offer to the university community; & a Faculty Panel where you will be able to interact with professors and ask any unanswered questions.

Are the evening programs required?

No, however we strongly encourage you to attend.  The activities give you an opportunity to meet other people of the Texas State community. Activities planned for the weekend of PAWS Preview include Main Event, LBJ Birthday Bash, and the San Marcos Showdown, as well as events within your Residence Hall.

What will happen if I don’t attend PAWS Preview?

A hold will be placed on your student records.  This will not allow you to register for subsequent semesters or acquire transcripts until you complete the make up requirements for PAWS Preview. Shortly after PAWS Preview you will receive a letter explaining what you must do in order to get the hold removed from your records.  It is up to YOU to make up PAWS Preview.

What if I have a scheduling conflict?

You need to talk to Lanita or Lisa at registration or call (512) 245-8295.
